Spam

If you are victim of a spam, and are ready to contact Gandi to ask for the spam to stop, because in a way or another you came to the conclusion that Gandi has something to do with the spam you received, please read CAREFULLY what follows BEFORE submitting a report.

If you are using Gandi services (such as redirections, custom DNS, and/or secondary DNS) and you are spamming, please also read what follows, which are our acceptable use policy.

Identifying the true relationship between Gandi and the spam you received

You may have come to the conclusion that Gandi has something to do with your spam for any of this reason:
  • you see an email address ending in either in the From: or the To: header of the spam you received: please note that spammers routinely put forged headers. Gandi does not spam, nor maintain lists of its customers to spam them, and even less to resell those lists to anyone. Such email adresses in From: or To: header are just forged, and do not mean in any way that Gandi created this spam, or relayed it. To find really who sent the spam, please see all headers and use information such as the one provided on the Stopspam website (http://www.stopspam.org/email/headers/headers.html)
  • you see names like redir-mail-telehouse1.gandi.net or redir-mail-telehouse2.gandi.net in the Received: headers of your spam, and believe that Gandi is running an open relay: Gandi does not have any open relays. We take great care to verify this fact on an ongoing basis. If the spam was relayed by our servers, it means that it was sent to an email on a domain for which we provide free email redirection services, and thus email sent to this domain was received by our server and then relayed to the forwarding adress provided by the domain name owner in our Web interface. The fact that the spam went through our relays indeed show that our email forwarding service is working.
  • by doing a whois on any domain name found in the email, you see that the domain name is handled by Gandi: Gandi is an ICANN accredited Registrar, and as such registers domain names on behalf of its customer. Gandi provides no webhosting nor email accounts to its customer, only the registration of the domain name. The use of the domain name is only up to the person owning it, and/or its contacts (see whois to find the owner and the contacts of the domain name). We can not deactivate and even less delete a domain name just because it is used in a spam: we can not and do not want to act as a judge. But please read what follows.
  • by following one of the link given in the spam you received, you come to an error page, stating that this domain name has been registered with Gandi: this means that the domain name on which was the link you followed use our free web redirection service, but its owner did not setup the URL to forward to. Thus you get back a blank page just telling you that this domain name was registered with Gandi.

Now, what can Gandi do?

As stated previously, Gandi is just a technical proxy to register domain names. It does not provide webhosting services nor email accounts that can be used to spam.

However this does not mean that we condone nor accept spams. It just means that our position, as Registrar, is very limited towards spam.

Thus, except if the domain name advertised in the spam, or any email address provided are on a domain name handled by Gandi, for which we provide Web/email redirection services, we can not make any modification on the domain name, nor delete it.
But, if the domain name uses our redirection services and/or receives more than few hundreds of email per day through our email redirection services, then we will stop providing email/web redirection services indefinitely. The customer would then need to provide other nameservers to handle its domain name.

Please also note that, as any ICANN accredited Registrar, we must make sure that information available in whois is valid. If you believe that for any domain name related to your spam information shown in whois is false, please contact us and provide all information. Follow the procedure given to you by our staff, and if the information is not corrected, per §VI-7 of our contract, the domain name will be deleted.

We hope these explanations were helpful. For any question, please feel free to contact us.
